The health benefits aren't often spoken of or displayed when it comes to popcorn or in other words, maize (corn). As well as it being a perfect past time snack, there are some incredible benefits that you should know about whilst eating this gift from nature.
New studies suggest that a serving of popcorn contains more antioxidants than a day worth of fruit and vegetables.
Popcorn contains more polyphenols than most other natural foods. Polyphenols are healthy antioxidants that promote not only brain and cardiovascular health but are said to help protect your skin from UV radiation. Since popcorn is comprised of 86% less water than fruits and vegetables, these polyphenols are less diluted, making them considerably more healthy. Surprisingly, popcorn has more iron in it than 1 cup of spinach, not by much but it is true!
One cup of popcorn contains over 4 grams of protein, and it also contains vitamins B6, A, E and K. Folate, Niacin, Riboflavin, Thiamin and Pantothenic acid. These are nutrients that perform many functions in your body, including keeping red blood cells healthy and developing normally.
Another advantage is fibre when the body has a good amount of fibre; it is easier for it to manage the release of insulin and blood sugar. Popcorn isn't going to solve all your daily vitamin needs, but it is a great contributor that you should consider adding to your diet.
